Rain or shine: Hundreds attend annual Car Free Day festival in Surrey

Hundreds of people attended the 2026 Car Free Day Surrey festival despite the rain showers.
Dozens of vendors, several food trucks, and entertainment stages lined 137 Street between 74 Ave and 72A Ave, transforming the normally busy side street into a temporary “car-free zone” from noon- 8 p.m. Saturday (June 6).
The free, family-friendly event also featured a special soccer bus with a “FIFA-themed TransLink wrap.” There was also a rock-climbing wall, mini golf, bounce houses, and live music and performances.
“What started as a grassroots movement to promote sustainable living has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated events, attracting thousands of attendees each year,” reads an event description on carfree.ca.
Sponsors of the fifth annual fest include Newton BIA, Translink, City of Surrey and Amazon.
The event starts in Vancouver on Commercial Drive and has grown to other communities over the years.
“The expansion of Car Free Days also highlights the event’s impact on raising awareness about the benefits of reducing car dependence. By creating temporary car-free zones, the festival demonstrates how streets can be reimagined as public spaces that prioritize people over vehicles,” reads the event description. “This shift in perspective encourages residents to consider alternative modes of transportation, such as biking, walking, and public transit, contributing to the city’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.”
Surrey is the first of many Car Free Days in the Lower Mainland this summer. The next one is on June 27th in North Vancouver, followed by one in Port Moody on August 16th.
