Caitlin Clark’s calling card always has been her shooting.

But in the past 10 days, as Clark swats aside questions about her future and any whispers of discontent with head coach Stephanie White, her shooting has fallen off a cliff.

By her nature, Clark is not the WNBA’s most efficient shooter, and she probably never will be. She takes a high percentage of 3-point shots and struggles driving to her left.

However, Clark’s recent games have been worrisome.

In the Fever’s past four, the two-time All-Star has needed 50 shot attempts to score 49 points. Indiana has lost three of those four games, and the championship-chasing Fever are a disappointing 5-5 nearly a quarter of the way through the regular season.

Caitlin Clark’s last four games:

16 PTS | 3-12 FG (25.0%)
6 PTS | 1-7 FG (14.3%)
17 PTS | 6-17 FG (35.3%)
10 PTS | 4-14 FG (28.6%)

Among those with at least 250 minutes played, just 14 players rank worse than Clark in effective field-goal percentage, which measures shooting efficiency to adjust for 3-pointers being worth more than twos.

Clark’s eFG percentage is just 45.7, while her true shooting percentage — which measures free throws as well as 2s and 3s — is the worst of her three-year career at 53.2 percent.

Only Kelsey Mitchell is taking more shots per game than Clark among Fever players, but Mitchell is much more efficient on her attempts than Clark is. Finding the right balance in the backcourt figures to be one of the dominant, ongoing storylines in Indiana this season.
