LETTER: Surrey residents deserve answers about police chief’s ouster

The recent termination of Surrey Police Service Chief Norm Lipinski, along with the resignation of board directors Harley Chappell and James Carwana, has generated considerable discussion in Surrey.
While many residents are seeking accountability and answers, I believe the more important question is whether public safety remains strong. When someone calls 911, does help arrive when it is needed? Do families feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods? Are extortionists, violent offenders, and organized criminals being thoroughly investigated and brought to justice?
These are the issues that affect residents every day.
Political infighting and behind-the-scenes disputes may generate headlines, but they should not distract us from the core purpose of policing: protecting the public. The true measure of success is not political drama but whether people feel safe and supported when they need help most.
For those concerned about the political decisions surrounding these recent events, the next municipal election on Oct. 17 will provide an opportunity to support candidates whose commitment to public safety aligns with their values.
Surrey residents deserve answers, but above all, they deserve a police service that keeps their communities safe.
