A 65-year-old man from Ottawa was killed and his passenger seriously injured Saturday in a multi-vehicle collision in a construction zone on Highway 103 near Mahone Bay, N.S.
RCMP said in a news release Monday that several vehicles were stopped Saturday afternoon at temporary traffic lights in a construction zone when a pickup truck entered the zone without stopping.
The pickup struck an SUV driven by the Ottawa man. It also struck another SUV, and a fourth vehicle sustained minor damage, the release said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 64-year-old woman from Ottawa, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
RCMP Cpl. Carlie McCann said the incident underscores the need for constant vigilance on the province’s highways.
“Any time you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle, your full attention needs to be on keeping the roads safe for everyone in your vehicle and other people who are using the road,” McCann said.
“So, regardless of where you are, what’s going on around you, please ensure when you’re behind the wheel that you are aware of everything that’s happening, whether that be construction zones, other vehicles on the road, other people using the road, whether that’s pedestrians or cyclists.”
A section of the highway was closed for several hours after the collision.
