A man has been charged with arson after he allegedly set fire to the downtown Dollarama store.

A man went into the store on Portage Avenue and set fire to some merchandise shortly before 7 p.m. on May 5, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

The fire spread quickly and caused substantial damage before security staff extinguished it, police said.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man, who was already in custody for another matter, at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on Thursday.

He is charged with arson causing damage to property and two counts of failure to comply with probation. The man remains in custody.
