Weekend flooding in a Toronto Community Housing building in East York has displaced people in 28 units, officials say.
The flooding happened in one tower at 444 Lumsden Ave., near Main Street and Danforth Avenue, on Sunday shortly after 3 a.m., according to Toronto Fire Services.
In a statement on its website Sunday, Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) said a burst hot pipe on the 17th floor of the East Tower of the building caused the flooding.
No one was injured, but 43 units were affected in all, and tenants in 28 units had to be relocated, TCHC said.
“Tenants in units with more severe damage may need to stay in alternative accommodations for a longer period of time,” TCHC said in the statement Sunday.
In a separate statement Monday, Kimberly Moser, spokesperson for TCHC, described the flood as significant. She said some of the tenants who were displaced on Sunday night stayed with family or friends, while others went to a hotel arranged by TCHC.
Elevators in the East Tower of the complex are down, while elevators in the West Tower are not. Both towers have 273 units combined, said Moser.
“TCHC staff remain at both the building and the hotel, supporting impacted tenants with food, transportation and other necessities, including laundry,” she said.
Moser said TCHC staff are monitoring tenants with mobility and accessibility needs in the East Tower and tenants in two units were moved to the hotel to accommodate their needs.
Cleanup began on Sunday and will continue as needed, she said.
“We look forward to tenants returning home over the next few days and will continue to support them with anything they need, including insurance and damage claims,” Moser said.
