The Montreal police arson squad will investigate the circumstances of a fire that apparently led to the death of 73-year-old man early Tuesday.

The fire broke out in an apartment on d’Avila St. near de Choisy St. in the borough of St-Léonard. Montreal police were called to the scene by Urgences Santé around 1:30 a.m., after paramedics found the man in the apartment. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene.

While an initial investigation suggests the fire was accidental, Montreal police are automatically assigned to examine the circumstances of a fire that results in the loss of human life.

Nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution but residents were later able to return to their homes.
