VANCOUVER — British Columbia’s police watchdog has been asked to investigate after police in East Vancouver fatally shot a person while responding to a home invasion involving a hostage.

Vancouver police say they were called late Monday to the 3600 block of Commercial Street about a “violent” home invasion.

Investigators claim the suspect entered the home and was holding a man hostage.

Police say despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, the suspect was shot and killed, while the hostage was taken to hospital with injuries and has since been released.
