Cheers to 100 years: Ocean Park celebrates historic milestone

When it came to celebrating a milestone, inclement weather didn’t dampen spirits in Ocean Park.
Held June 5-6, the Centennial Celebration aimed to honour the community’s past, celebrate its present and look ahead to its future.
While the risk of rain led to cancellation of a morning car show planned for Saturday, “everything else went on as planned and was well-attended,” Regula Appenzeller, a director of the Ocean Park Community Association, told Peace Arch News.
The weekend “showcased the very best of Ocean Park: community spirit, volunteerism, local pride, and meaningful connections between neighbours,” a news release issued Monday (June 8) states.
“Throughout the celebration, residents and visitors enjoyed historical displays, a sold-out Heritage Trivia Night, classic carnival games, children’s entertainment, community activities, the Passport to the Village, and a grand finale concert by the Ocean Park Wailers.
“Together, these experiences reflected the vibrant, welcoming, and community-minded character that has defined Ocean Park for the past 100 years.”
Appenzeller described the weather as “tricky,” but said in the end, there was just 20 minutes of solid rain in the mix.
The concert, she added, “was a fantastic way to end the weekend.”
“People of all ages were dancing the night away!”
The event came together over the course of several months and “countless” volunteer hours to honour “two legacies at the heart of Ocean Park life” – the Ocean Park Community Association and the historic Ocean Park Hall.
The OPCA was founded in 1925, and the 1577 128 St. hall opened a year later.
Congratulatory messages shared at the celebration included a commemorative letter from Prime Minister Mark Carney – “recognizing the community’s 100 years of history, volunteerism, and contribution to the region” – presented by South Surrey-White Rock MP Ernie Klassen.
In the news release, OPCA board members said enthusiasm for the Ocean Park community seen at the centennial event “demonstrated just how much people value this community and its shared history.”
