Brandon Aiyuk broke his public silence on his situation with the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend, posting a series of layered analogies to Instagram that left many fans puzzled. Former star receiver Chad Ochocinco, appearing on the “Nightcap” podcast with Shannon Sharpe, said he understood exactly what Aiyuk was getting at — and largely took issue with the approach.
In the post, Aiyuk implied that the 49ers undervalued him while other teams would recognize what he brings. Ochocinco said the message wasn’t hard to decode for someone who’s been in that locker room world.

“A lot of people probably not going to get it,” he said. “But the concept and what he’s trying to say is obviously I’m a 49er, and the other people that might want me — instead of letting me go elsewhere so someone else could have that same toy that the child is playing with, they’re like, ‘Nah, I want to keep him here.'”
Ochocinco pushed back on the broader strategy, though. He pointed out that Aiyuk reportedly was willing to return money to force his way out of San Francisco — a move Ochocinco found difficult to justify.
Ochocinco also questioned whether any team would offer Aiyuk a long-term contract given his track record of conflict with the organization.

“He might not get a long-term deal,” he said. “He’s going to get a prove-it deal, coming off that ACL. To have another team take a liking in you, to want to take a chance on you — some of these antics he’s been doing, bro.”
Aiyuk hasn’t played a snap for the 49ers since he tore his ACL during the 2024 season. He sat out the entire 2025 season and was away from the team so often that the 49ers voided all the guarantees in his contract. Aiyuk has made his desired destination known plainly in the Washington Commanders, but, so far, the Commanders aren’t interested in trading for him and the 49ers are interested in releasing him.
That leaves everyone in a state of perpetual stasis ahead of the 2026 season.
