It’s actually the first time Shelton has reached the quarterfinals at back-to-back Masters 1000s.

But Zverev has been a rough customer for Shelton in the past, the German winning all three of their previous meetings. Their first meeting, which was in the same round of Cincinnati a year ago, was a close one, as he emerged with a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory. But they’ve played twice more since then, both times this year, and he won them both in straight sets, a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the final of the clay-court event in Munich and a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (1) victory in the semifinals of the grass-court event in Stuttgart.

Shelton has never beaten a Top 3 player, either, his best career wins both coming against No. 4s, beating then-No. 4 Jannik Sinner in Shanghai in 2023 and No. 4-ranked Taylor Fritz just last week in Canada.
