Over 40,000 tickets have been sold for the final fight of Katie Taylor’s professional boxing career at Croke Park, according to her promoter.
Taylor will fight Flora Pili at the biggest stadium in Ireland on Saturday, 5 September.
Two pre-sale events took place this morning with 50% of the capacity of Croke Park sold.
A virtual queue of over 30,000 was reported early in the sale.
The remaining tickets will go on sale this Friday. Matchroom say they expect the event to sell out.
Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn described the sales today as “incredible”.
It’ll be the first time that boxing has taken place at the GAA’s HQ since Muhammad Ali fought Alvin Lewis in July 1972.
“We’ve actually brought boxing back to Croke Park,” Taylor said of her upcoming swansong.
“This is going to be the most iconic moment of my whole career.
“I have a chance to become a three-time undisputed champion, how amazing is that? The perfect way to end my career.”
Taylor has engaged in a promotional tour around Ireland in the last week, featuring with local and national media to promote the fight.
She also appeared on the pitch during half-time of the Leinster Hurling final at Croker.
It will be a third and final professional bout of her career to be staged on the island, having previously fought twice at the 3Arena.
She will likely now make history by selling over 80,000 tickets in the outdoor venue.
An undercard has yet to be announced for the event.
