Top 7 NHL Prospect Pools Ranking – Detroit Red Wings
To be included in my analysis of NHL teams’ prospect pools, a player must meet two conditions: he must not be established in the Bettman circuit and must be under the age of 23 (a limit extended to 25 years old for goaltenders). We focus primarily on the players occupying the higher levels of an organization’s depth chart, leaving aside depth pieces whose potential impact should be limited.
The Yzerplan does not seem to be paying off so far. The team has had two strong seasons in a row, only to collapse late in the schedule. The shortcuts taken by Yzerman probably did not help with the disappointing results of the last two seasons. Nevertheless, personally, I am far from disliking the Detroit Red Wings’ prospect pool.
We have two potential #1 goaltenders in the system with Trey Augustine and Sebastian Cossa. Alongside them, Carter Bear, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka all have NHL potential, whether as players in the top six forwards or on the second defensive pairings. They are joined by Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur, Max Plante, Jesse Kiiskinen, William Willander, and Shai Buium, who could all hope to play a role with the team.
With young players like Marco Kasper (who has experienced a decline offensively, but not defensively), it creates a good mix of players who, for the most part, are extremely difficult to play against. The Detroit Red Wings may be a little high in the rankings if we consider only the pure talent of their prospect pool. However, with two excellent goaltenders and a list of players that fits well with playoff-style hockey, I had no hesitation placing them in the 3rd spot.
I hope for their sake that they focus on talent during upcoming drafts and rejuvenate the team’s core a little. The veterans have had their time. They are now blocking the development of the young players. I would unfortunately not be surprised if Marco Kasper is sacrificed soon, just like Axel Sandin-Pellikka, in order to bring in more experienced players. My confidence in the general manager has never been lower.
