A crash forced the closure of the Melocheville Tunnel in both directions on Thursday, disrupting traffic in the Beauharnois region southwest of Montreal.

The tunnel, which runs under the Beauharnois Canal along Route 132, remained closed Thursday afternoon as emergency crews responded at the scene, according to authorities.

The City of Beauharnois described the incident as a “major accident.” It urged motorists to avoid the area.

Thursday evening, it was not immediately clear when the tunnel would reopen.

Drivers were being directed to use the Madeleine-Parent Bridge on Highway 30 as an alternate route while the closure remained in effect.
