Four outs from creating the 25th perfect game in MLB history, Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered an 89-mph slider to Chase Meidroth. The Chicago White Sox second baseman connected on a grounder to shortstop Mookie Betts.

Inning over? Nope.

The six-time Gold Glover failed to handle the slow roller as Meidroth, the 23rd batter, became the first baserunner against Yamamoto. Santiago Espinal also had a chance to make a play off a rebound, but the second baseman failed to cleanly handle the booted ball.

Yamamoto (7-4) lost his perfect game bid, but he earned the distinction of becoming the first pitcher to ever record 22 consecutive outs at the start of a game after finishing his previous appearance by retiring 22 straight.

Yamamoto, who was credited with 45 straight outs, lost his no-hit bid two pitches into the ninth inning when White Sox center fielder Tristian Peters slammed a solo home run to right field. He earned a 7-1 victory at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Yamamoto recovered to retire Edgar Quero and was pulled after 109 pitches. The visiting crowd celebrated the effort with a standing ovation.

During Yamamoto’s previous start, a 9-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on June 6, Oswald Peraza opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-out triple. That was his last hit before Saturday.

The 45 straight outs Yamamoto created over his past two outings matched former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle’s effort in 2009 for the second-longest streak in league history. San Francisco Giants‘ Yusmeiro Petit established the record of 46 consecutive outs in 2014.

Yamamoto also lost a no-hit bid in the ninth inning last season, also on a homer. Baltimore Orioles‘ Jackson Holliday connected during the Sept. 6, 2025, matchup.
