Sunday, June 14, is very sunny indeed in Vancouver.
Environment Canada meteorologist Nan Lu notes with a ridge of high pressure over the region, parts of southern BC could see records broken in the afternoon.
In Vancouver, the current record is 25.6 C, and the forecast shows an expected high of 25 C. Meanwhile, Maple Ridge and areas further inland from the ocean could crack 32 C; the record there is 30.5 C.
The sunny weather is expected to mostly remain in Vancouver over the coming week, but temperatures are expected to drop.
Cloudy Monday
“Tomorrow we’re cooling off,” Lu tells V.I.A.
That’s because the ridge of high pressure over Vancouver will weaken and a system in Northern BC will influence the south coast. However, clouds are expected to remain high, which means while the sky may be grey, no precipitation is expected.
“It’ll just be mid to high clouds in Vancouver,” Lu says.
Highs will still be above average, but not record-breaking, with a high of about 23 C predicted in Vancouver. Areas inland can expect to see temperatures closer to 28 C.
Clear skies for the rest of the week
The clouds are expected to move on quickly from Vancouver after Monday, with mainly sunny days through the rest of the week and into next weekend.
However, it’s not due to a ridge of high pressure, which means some clouds could float through the region, and temperatures aren’t expected to get as hot, with highs of 22 C and 23 C until the weekend.
Also helping keep things cooler will be a light sea breeze, which will flow through the region at about 20 km, with gusts up to 40 km on Tuesday (with lighter winds later in the week helping keep temperatures down).
Thursday, June 18, when Canada takes on Qatar in the World Cup, looks to be right in the middle of the nice stretch, with a high of 23 C and a light breeze.
With sun and temperatures a bit above normal — the average for this time of the year in Vancouver is 18 C (closer to the water) — Lu suggests people prepare for the sun. With many watch parties outdoors, protection against the UV rays will be important.
