Ten high school ball hockey teams converged in North Surrey for provincial championships in two divisions June 12-14.
The three-day invitational tournament saw four teams compete in Tier 1, another six in Tier 2 at North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex.
Surrey teams involved were Panorama Ridge Thunder (Tier 1) along with Fraser Heights Firehawks, North Surrey Spartans and Crescent Heights Academy Chargers (all Tier 2).
In the end, Burnaby Central Wildcats were 4-2 winners over Maple Ridge Secondary Ramblers for the Tier 1 banner.
On the Tier 2 side, Campbell River Seawolves won a thriller in overtime, 2-1 over Delta Secondary Pacers.
“The tournament was well received by the students, their coaches and parents who enjoyed the spirit of the tournament,” said event planner Rob Moxness. “We are hoping to have 20 teams next year that will include a four-team girls division.”
Moxness thanks Coastal Ball Hockey for their help to run and promote the tournament with banners and other special touches.
In B.C., high school ball hockey is not played under the BC School Sports umbrella due to a lack of teams involved province-wide. “We have close to 45 schools participating but not in all zones of the province,” Moxness explained.
Meantime, North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex has become a hub for ball hockey in spring and summer months.
From July 24-26, adult teams from across B.C. will be there for the 2026 Coastal Ball Hockey Championships in men’s and women’s divisions. The tournament will involve winners from six associations/leagues including Fraser Valley Ball Hockey Association (Delta, Surrey), Prince George Ball Hockey League (Interior), True North Ball Hockey League (Langley), Valley Premier Ball Hockey League (Chilliwack), Vancouver Island Ball Hockey League (Vancouver Island) and White Rock Ball Hockey League (White Rock, Surrey).
