The sun wasn’t the only thing shining over the weekend.
The South Surrey White Rock Minor Softball Association enjoyed another outstanding weekend of softball achievement, both at home and across the region, as SSWRMSA teams displayed grit, skill and heart in scorching temperatures.
The association hosted the U11C District 7 Jamboree Championship June 12-14 at Sunnyside Park, welcoming 12 teams from across Surrey to compete on the association’s newly renovated fields, SSWRMSA president Thomas Bell said, noting the upgrades at Sunnyside have transformed the park into a premier softball venue, and the association was thrilled to showcase the improved diamonds while welcoming families, athletes and fans from throughout the district.
“We are proud to welcome teams to our new, stunning fields,” Bell said in an email. “These improvements allow us to host events like the District 7 Jamboree and create memorable experiences for young athletes.”
The weekend’s competition was marked by dominant SSWRMSA performances, he continued, with the Cobalt Crushers, Shadow Strikers and Flamethrowers all finishing the round robin portion of the tournament undefeated, entering the playoffs as top seeds.
By Sunday afternoon, the semifinals featured an all SSWRMSA lineup: the Cobalt Crushers, the Flamethrowers, the Lime Drivers and the Shadow Strikers. In the medal games, the Shadow Strikers claimed bronze over the Flamethrowers, and the Lime Drivers captured the championship with a victory over the Cobalt Crushers.
Bell shared that the Lime Drivers delivered the most remarkable storyline of the weekend: entering the playoffs as the 11th seed after a challenging round robin, they surged through Sunday’s elimination games with determination and confidence.
In intense heat, the team earned three inspired wins in a row, and completed their Cinderella run with a championship win over the top-seeded Cobalt Crushers.
“Our players showed unbelievable heart today,” said Lime Drivers head coach Kylie Brine. “They came into Sunday determined to rewrite the story, and they did exactly that.”
The heat and competition were demanding, but the team stayed together, trusted each other and delivered their best softball of the season when it mattered most, she shared.
Bell praised the association’s athletes for their exceptional performances.
“We are incredibly proud of how our SSWRMSA teams represented our community at the District 7 Jamboree,” he said. “To see our athletes fill every semifinal spot and compete with such passion is a testament to the strength of our programs and the dedication of our coaches.”
Bell also expressed gratitude to the families who continue to support the association and those involved with helping the tournament happen, as well as an “extraordinary team of volunteers.”
SSWRMSA teams also excelled beyond Sunnyside Park. The U13A Thunder 2013 team captured yet another gold, this time at the NSA Washington Schools Out Invitational in Mount Vernon, Bell said, adding that this is their third straight undefeated tournament championship.
Meanwhile, the U11 Rep Thunder 2015 team, led by head coach Kyle Stevens, earned bronze at the Softball BC U11 Rep Showcase at Softball City, marking their sixth consecutive tournament medal.
From the youngest U11C athletes to the elite U13A Thunder squad, SSWRMSA teams demonstrated resilience, skill and the unmistakable Thunder spirit, Bell concluded, saying it was a weekend “defined by scorching temperatures, unforgettable performances and a community that continues to raise the bar for youth softball in British Columbia.”
