The Montreal Alouettes have signed Canadian kicker Lewis Ward to the practice squad. The move was announced on Tuesday morning.
The 33-year-old was released by the Ottawa Redblacks in April after making only 35-of-46 field goal attempts (76.1 percent) in 2025. 3DownNation reported that the move was made ahead of a $10,000 report-and-pass bonus, though he will still collect the $15,000 in guaranteed money included in his original contract for 2027.
“We are very pleased to welcome Lewis to our team,” said Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia in a statement. “He’s had one of the most accurate kicking legs in the CFL in recent years and we are confident he still has plenty of good football left in the tank.”

The signing came on the same day José Maltos Díaz, Montreal’s veteran kicker, missed practice due to a groin injury.
The University of Ottawa product played 117 regular-season games with the Redblacks, converting 300-of-347 field goal attempts (86.5 percent) with a career-long of 56 yards. He also registered 140-of-151 convert attempts (92.7 percent).
Ward was named the league’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and Most Outstanding Rookie in 2018. That same season, he earned All-CFL honours after converting 51-of-52 field goal attempts (98.1 percent) with a long of 52 yards. He also set a professional football record when he converted 69 consecutive field goals across the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
The Alouettes have also released American return specialist Philip Brooks.
The Montreal Alouettes (2-0) will visit the Edmonton Elks (1-0) at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, June 20 with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT. The Alouettes are coming off an impressive win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Elks spent Week 2 on bye.
The weather forecast in Edmonton calls for a high of 18 degrees and a 60 percent chance of showers. The game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on TSN 690 (English) or 99.5 Montreal (French) in Montreal or 880 CHED in Edmonton.
