An unprovoked knife attack on a woman walking in Mill Woods has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man, say Edmonton police.
The 24-year-old woman was walking home near Knottwood Road and Mill Woods Road around 10:48 p.m. on May 11 when she was approached by the assailant who stabbed her in an unprovoked attack before fleeing on foot, said a Tuesday police news release.
A suspect was arrested June 8.
“The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police do not believe that the suspect and victim were known to one another,” the release said.
“We are thankful that the woman who was attacked did not sustain life-threatening injuries and that we were able to successfully locate and arrest the male suspect,” said Const. Andrew Jarvis with the investigative response team.
“Everyone has a right to be safe in our city, and we will continue to work closely with members of the public to investigate reported concerns, alongside our proactive policing efforts that are focused on maintaining safety in our shared spaces.”
John Cabeza Cuero is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and assault with a weapon.
His next court date is set for June 17 in Edmonton.
