One person is dead after a head-on crash between a vehicle and a semi-trailer south of Winnipeg.
RCMP were called just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to the crash on Highway 59 near Prefontaine Road, about 20 kilometres south of the city.
A vehicle with two people inside was heading north on Highway 59 when it crossed into the path of the southbound semi, RCMP said in a news release. The semi and vehicle both ended up in the ditch.
The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 20-year-old man from Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The passenger, a 13-year-old boy from Steinbach, Man., was airlifted to a Winnipeg hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi, a 45-year-old man from Alberta, was not injured.
A 10-kilometre stretch of Highway 59, from Highway 210 to Highway 311, was closed for more than 10 hours, reopening just before 11 a.m.
A caution remains in place, however, with a reduced speed of 60 km/h in the area, as RCMP and workers remain on scene, police said.
