Two pets died and one person was hospitalized after a fire broke out at a downtown Ottawa highrise Tuesday night, according to first responders.
Firefighters were called to the building on McLeod Street just after 7 p.m. for a fire in a seventh-floor unit.
Smoke was visible when firefighters arrived, according to Ottawa Fire Services (OFS). The lone person living in the affected unit was found in the lobby suffering from smoke inhalation, they said.
Paramedic spokesperson Nicolas Guertin told CBC they took one person to hospital in serious but stable condition. Another person was treated at the scene, Guertin said.
Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to other units. The fire was declared under control at 7:16 p.m.
While no one was found inside the unit, firefighters did find a dead dog and cat during their searches, OFS said.
Two occupants have been displaced.
This was the first of three fires that Ottawa firefighters responded to between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
