Equip Sport Lockers, via City of Edmonton.
The City of Edmonton has launched free sport equipment lockers, joining other Canadian cities in doing so with the help of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities.
Edmonton is the first community in Alberta to offer this service, with 30 Equip Sports Lockers installed in parks across the city.
The lockers contain high-quality recreational equipment, such as basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, frisbees and more. All items are available to residents free of charge.
Residents have to download the Equip Sport app on an Apple or Android device which comes with a map to all stations. Lockers can be unlocked with a tap, with gear returned to the designated slot when done.
Stations are stocked to match the surrounding sporting locations. Parks with dedicated courts will carry balls for those court sports, with parks with more open field spaces offer equipment well fit for those areas as well.
The program is a five-year pilot project funded by the Jumpstart Charities. Stations will run seasonally from Spring to Fall, with all equipment and hardware stored off-site during the winter months.
Each locker contains a support QR code, which residents can scan to report damage, graffiti or a faulty latch. Lockers that are significantly damaged on two separate occasions will be relocated to an alternate site.
