24-hour Breka bakery opens in Surrey at food-focused King George Hub

People lined up for a taste of Breka Bakery & Café at the new Surrey location, ninth in the Vancouver-based chain.
The popular 24-hour bakery opened Thursday (June 11) at King George Hub, home to a growing number of food and drink businesses.
By 10:30 a.m. on Breka’s opening day, the queue of people stretched the length of the building at the corner of Fraser Highway and Whalley Boulevard.
Anna Kruger waited close to 45 minutes to enter a place she’s visited before in Vancouver.
“I’ve been maybe half a dozen times,” she said. “Anytime we’re in Vancouver, I’m like, ‘We gotta hit Breka before we leave.’ It’s open 24 hours, so you can go after an event, a concert. We usually do that and I buy a big bag and bring it home.”

Launched in 2006, Breka is known for breads, cakes, cookies, coffee and more.
“I love how they have gluten-free options,” said Kruger, who lives in Guildford. “Everything’s really tasty — their Nutella donut is amazing. It’s just nice that it’s open late. You don’t have to go to a bakery before 1 p.m. before everything sells out.
“I think this is going to be huge — somewhere to go for a dessert after you go see a movie, something like that. It’s a nice spot,” she added.
Friends Asmi Pahwa and Siya Kalra also lined up Thursday morning.
“In Vancouver it’s a go-to spot, basically, at the end of a night,” said Pahwa, who likes Breka’s chicken panini and matcha, while Kalra prefers the bakery’s spinach artichoke pastry.
“It’s good to have one here because we live right over there, not too far. It’s very convenient, two minutes away,” Pahwa added.
King George Hub’s business directory now lists 23 food and restaurant establishments, from A&W to Waffle House, at the SkyTrain Station. Other options include Big Way Hot Pot, Chipotle, Jollibee, Marble Slab Creamery, Pokerrito, Ruex Café and Bar, Sushi Street and more.
The complex is also home to Save-On-Foods, Rexall, Anytime Fitness, Sandbox VR and other shops and services.
