Birdie is the word at Grandview Heights Secondary in South Surrey this weekend.
That’s when the South Surrey Badminton Society (SSBS), a registered non-profit organization, is hosting the Sparks Labs 2026 White Rock Badminton Tournament.
A Badminton BC-recognized event that has grown into one of the region’s largest community badminton gatherings, the tournament welcomed more than 300 players and families from across Surrey and the Lower Mainland last year, bringing together participants of all ages through competition, volunteerism, and community engagement, a release noted.
Sparks Labs grew from friendship and a love of badminton, the release shared, and is now an organization that uses sports and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education as platforms for community service.
Through partnerships and co-organized charitable initiatives, the team has helped raise more than $100,000 in support of organizations including Peace Arch Hospital Foundation and other community initiatives, while engaging hundreds of young people in educational and volunteer programs.
This year’s tournament will feature divisions ranging from U13 players to masters categories for athletes aged 70-plus, 85-plus, and even more than 100 years old, creating a unique opportunity for multiple generations to connect through sport.
The tournament takes place Saturday through Monday (June 20-22) at the school, located at 16987 25 Ave.
