SAN DIEGO — Corey Heim chased down teammate Tyler Reddick in the closing laps and capitalized on a late mistake to earn his first NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday in the inaugural Anduril 250 at Naval Base Coronado.

The 23XI Racing driver, making just his 13th career start, surged from mid-pack adversity to the front and executed a decisive move with three laps remaining on the 3.4-mile street circuit. Heim, who started 13th and slipped as far back as 20th early, credited patience and late-race composure for the breakthrough win.

“I’m speechless,” Heim said. “We started off struggling, but after Stage Two I just took a deep breath, reset and went after it. … It feels like a dream.”

Heim’s No. 67 Toyota came alive on fresh tires after early struggles on worn sets, allowing him to close on Reddick in the final run. With five laps to go, Heim began applying pressure before Reddick faltered under braking. The two made contact in Turn 5, but maintained control in a clean if tense exchange.

“I thought I was going to be able to hold him off,” Reddick said. “We struggled with rear tire life all weekend. I overdid it trying to get back to him. You don’t want to pass a teammate that way.”

Bubba Wallace completed a historic day for 23XI Racing by finishing second, giving the organization its first 1-2 finish. Kyle Larson finished third for Chevrolet after charging forward through varying pit strategies, while Ford drivers Zane Smith and AJ Allmendinger rounded out the top five.

The win was significant on multiple fronts. It marked Toyota’s fourth consecutive Cup Series victory — its longest streak since 2017 — and the manufacturer’s 11th win of the season. It also delivered the first Cup win for the No. 67 in series history.

Heim’s rise came amid a chaotic race defined by strategy swings, slick conditions and a major Stage Two crash that eliminated several contenders, including early front-runners Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch. The tight, technical nature of the temporary street course proved challenging throughout the 75-lap race.

“An unbelievable event,” said Ryan Blaney, who finished ninth. “It’s a wild road course. The Navy and the base put on something special.”

Riley Herbst avoided one of the race’s biggest incidents and ran inside the top five late before fading to eighth after contact on the final lap. Reddick, despite leading nine laps and battling for the win, dropped to 25th after damage and tire issues.

For Heim, the victory validated years of development in Toyota’s pipeline and came in a part-time Cup schedule that offered no guarantees.

“I didn’t expect to come in and win,” Heim said. “It hasn’t even sunk in yet.”

The NASCAR Cup Series now moves onto Sonoma Raceway next Sunday, June 28th for the Toyota Save Mart 250 at 3:30 p.m. ET as TNT Network takes over the summer series stretch.
