Officials are asking residents in and around the city of Edmonton to conserve water following heavy rain and localized flooding on Sunday.
The rain has pushed the region’s stormwater system to capacity, according to an Alberta Emergency Alert issued at 8:55 p.m.
“If the stormwater system continues to operate over-capacity, flooding and sewer backups will continue to increase,” the alert for the City of Edmonton reads.
Similar warnings were issued for nearby cities and towns such as St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Beaumont and Tofield.

Utilities provider EPCOR says customers should refrain from showering, running washing machines and dishwashers, and should cut back on flushing toilets.
“Every drop matters. Simple steps you take can be the difference in helping neighbours avoid flooding and sewer backups,” EPCOR wrote.

Environment Canada says up to 110 millimetres of rain fell in the area as of early Sunday evening, and another 40 millimetres was expected before tapering off Monday.
