8 Surrey sites in new ‘Freecouver’ book of free things to do

Sites in Surrey, White Rock and Delta make the Freecouver list of 101 free things to do in and around Vancouver.
That’s the focus of a new book co-authored by Surrey-raised Rebecca Bollwitt, better known as award-winning blogger Miss 604, and John Lee, Lonely Planet guidebook writer and travel columnist.
Together, in time for summer adventures, they aim to help people plan low-cost day trips across Metro Vancouver.
In Surrey, Bollwitt and Lee will sign copies of Freecouver this Saturday, June 27 at the Black Bond Books store at Central City Shopping Centre, 1 to 3 p.m.
The event is a fun homecoming for Vancouver resident Bollwitt, who once worked at Surrey Place Mall, now Central City mall, circa 1998. She managed the Bentley luggage/ bags retailer before transferring to Metrotown. “The Orange Julius crew was home to all the hot mall gossip,” she recalls. “Lunch breaks at Zellers. What a time it was.”
The eight Surrey places detailed in Freecouver are Barnston Island Ferry, BC Vintage Truck Museum, Historic Stewart Farm, Honeybee Centre, Museum of Surrey, Redwood Park, Surrey Art Gallery and Surrey Nature Centre.

“It’s easy to give up on going out when you live in a city routinely described as one of the most expensive in Canada,” the authors write. “But rather than staying on our coaches and admitting defeat, we’ve taken a different approach: scouting out and visiting the very best free attractions and activities in and around Vancouver.”
