Nathan Joseph had suffered from ill health previously, culminating in him having a life-saving operation out in Switzerland in 2020, having been bed-ridden for two years.

But he was able to return to the sport in late 2021, and just seven months later, in February 2022, he became the BFBA English Heavyweight champion after knocking out opponent Daniel Robson in Wolverhampton.

It was a total Bradford success story, as he trained out of Underhooks Gym, just off Leeds Road.

Poignantly, Joseph told the T&A at the time: “The sport kept me alive, as it was something to fight for.

“I pushed myself to box again over the last few months, and I feel as though I’ve got a few years left, especially with where I’ve been and what I’ve gone through over the last few years.”

Partner pays tribute

Joseph, who grew up in Bradford and became widely known and loved within the community, had a tribute paid to him by his partner of over five years, Deehan Mair.

She told the T&A: “He is remembered for his resilience, fierce loyalty, and the determination that defined him both inside and outside the ring.

“Throughout his life, Nathan faced challenges that would have overwhelmed many.

“Yet he continued to push forward with discipline, ambition, and a quiet strength that inspired those around him.

“His early‑morning training sessions, his commitment to the sport he loved, and his dream of becoming “The Guvnor” earned him deep respect from fighters and fans alike.

“Nathan underwent life‑saving treatment in Switzerland, defying the odds to return home and rebuild his life.

“His courage, both physical and emotional, left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.”

When will his funeral take place?

Joseph’s funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 30 at 12:45pm at Bierley Woods Crematorium, Shetcliffe Lane, Bierley, BD4 6QJ.  

All who knew him, trained with him, or supported him throughout his journey are welcome to attend and pay their respects.

A GoFundMe page has been set up, with all contributions going directly towards funeral costs and arrangements.
