South Surrey-White Rock MP named co-chair of Seniors Caucus

South Surrey–White Rock MP Ernie Klassen has taken on the role of co-chair of the Liberal Seniors Caucus.
Klassen said his years of community involvement as an advocate, small business owner, White Rock city council member and MP have given him a deep understanding of the issues affecting seniors’ daily lives.
“I am committed to ensuring that (their) voices are heard in Ottawa,” he said.
“Seniors have built our communities and helped shape our country. They deserve policies that support their health, well-being, housing security, financial stability, and quality of life.”
Klassen noted that White Rock and South South Surrey has a burgeoning older population: more than one in four residents in the riding are aged 65 and over, while in White Rock itself seniors represent close to 40 percent of the population.
The Liberal Seniors Caucus, currently co-chaired by fellow MPs Ron McKinnon and Juanita Nathan, recently brought together parliamentarians from across Canada to discuss issues that matter most to older Canadians.
Members emphasized the importance of maintaining an active and engaged caucus and expressed strong support for continuing these discussions when Parliament resumes in the fall.
Key priorities identified by caucus members include affordable and accessible housing for seniors, support for caregivers, income security, access to quality health care, protection from fraud, scams, and financial abuse, and public safety.
Members also expressed broad support for advocating for increased federal funding for seniors programs in the next federal budget.
“There is strong momentum behind addressing issues such as housing and fraud prevention, and I look forward to helping move these discussions forward,” said Klassen, adding that this work reflects the priorities he hears directly from constituents.
Through regular meetings with seniors’ organizations, community groups, and residents throughout South Surrey–White Rock, Klassen said he will continue to bring local concerns to Ottawa and advocate for practical solutions that improve quality of life for seniors.
He and his constituency office also assist residents with a range of federal programs and services, including Old Age Security, the Canada Pension Plan, the Canada Dental Care Plan, and other available federal supports available to seniors, he said.
