5th annual hockey tourney honours Surrey teen killed in crash

The Ronin Sharma Memorial Tournament is back for another year at Planet Ice Coquitlam (2300 Rocket Way, Coquitlam) from July 16 to 19.
Sharma was killed Aug. 21, 2021, in an early-morning car crash that also claimed the lives of his friends and Delta Hockey Academy teammates Parker Magnuson and Caleb Reimer, on 104 Avenue in Surrey’s Fraser Heights area.
The Ronin Sharma Foundation and hockey tournament were both created to honour Ronin’s legacy. The tournament includes eight youth divisions, male and female. There will also be raffle prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw.
“The Ronin Sharma Foundation has been established to honour his legacy by helping others achieve their dreams. Through fundraising, bursaries, scholarships, and additional aid, we will help those in the community that need it most,” reads a post on the website.
The foundation has distributed over $100,000 through scholarships, financial aid and supplying equipment. Last year, they helped 16 kids, and they are planning on beating that number this year.
“What started in honour of Ronin has grown into a weekend filled with community, remembrance, competition, and giving back,” reads a Ronin Sharma Foundation Instagram post.
Registration for teams is open until July 3 and costs $1,450.
