SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Friday was proclaimed as “Rick Brunson Appreciation Day” in Syracuse by city officials.
The Knicks Assistant Coach was born in Syracuse and spent part of his childhood in the Salt City. Of course, he was key to the success of the Knicks as they won the 2026 NBA Championship. The first championship they won in 53 years.
Rick and his son, Point Guard Jalen Brunson, are the first father-son duo to win a championship in the NBA.
“I wake up every day and I still don’t know if it’s true. It’s such an amazing feeling,” said Coach Brunson. “I played for the Knicks and we went to the NBA, but nothing beats your kids doing way better than you. For me to sit there and be a part of it is the best feeling ever.”
Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens said Rick and Jalen’s victory should set an example for everyone in the city. She said they proved that hard work eventually pays off.
“Sometimes we see the finished product and say, ‘I really want that.’ Because we see the joy and admiration and all that, but they didn’t see the sweat in the gym, they didn’t see the ankle twist, they didn’t see that you’re so tired and throwing up,” said Owens.
She added, “Anything that our young people do, they have to put in the work.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and State Senators Rachel May and Christopher Ryan also proclaimed the day for Coach Brunson.
