A 130-seat restaurant is taking over the former Sala Thai space with yakitori, customizable nabe, handcrafted drinks and free-meal giveaways.
A new Japanese restaurant is being built around one idea: “One table. Different cravings.”
Sumu, set to open in Vancouver later this July, is taking over the former Sala Thai location at 888 Burrard St.
The new business will offer four different dining experiences provided in one place: premium yakitori, imported binchotan charcoal, customizable nabe (Japanese hot pot), along with handcrafted drinks and creative side dishes.
The options make it easy for everyone in the group find something they love on the menu, says restaurant manager Don Hua.
“We wanted to create a place where no one at the table has to compromise,” Hua says. “Whether you come with family, friends, kids or business partners, everyone can eat how they feel and still share the same table.”
Sumu wants legendary status to return to former Sala Thai address
The 130-seat restaurant is also a new chapter for one of Vancouver’s long-standing restaurant spaces.
“Sala Thai was a legend in Vancouver,” Hua says. “We’re taking over that place, wishing that we can bring the legend back to [the space].”
Ahead of its official opening, Sumu has launched its founders club campaign on Instagram, giving 100 lucky guests the chance to experience the restaurant before and during its launch period.
The top prize winner will receive complimentary dining at Sumu throughout the opening month, plus four exclusive group-of-four dining experiences. All other winners will receive at least one complimentary dining experience at Sumu.

Firm opening dates for the restaurant aren’t set yet, but Hua says Sumu expect to open by the end of July.
