One person is in hospital in unstable condition after an early morning apartment fire on Hendon Avenue.

According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), crews responded to a monitored fire alarm at an eight-storey apartment building at 4:57 a.m. Friday.

When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in one suite and launched an interior attack. The blaze was brought under control by 5:28 a.m.

Firefighters rescued one person from the suite where the fire started. Paramedics treated the individual at the scene before transporting them to hospital in unstable condition.

No other injuries were reported.

Some residents evacuated the building on their own, while others safely sheltered in place as crews worked to extinguish the fire.

WFPS said the damage was largely contained to the suite where the fire originated. Once the fire was out, all other residents were able to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
