The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a man was fatally shot during an altercation with Edmonton police just before midnight on Friday night.
EPS says around 11:58 p.m. on June 26, officers responded to a call for assistance from the Edmonton Fire Rescue Service (EFRS) after a firetruck and a vehicle collided.
It is believed that the driver of the other vehicle attempted to assault emergency crews with a blunt object before fleeing the scene.
Following this, police received two hit-and-run reports in the southwest end of the city. Based on reports, police believed both hit-and-runs involved the same vehicle that had been involved in the collision with the firetruck.
Reports also indicate that the driver allegedly assaulted both the other drivers with a blunt object before fleeing each of those scenes. Minor injuries were reported from one of the incidents.
Some time later, officers reportedly spotted the vehicle in question in an open garage at a home along Christie Vista SW.
Following this, officers contained the home and tried to make contact with a man believed to be the driver in the earlier incidents; however, a confrontation reportedly occurred. Police say that the man was allegedly trying to use an edged weapon, at which point an officer fired a weapon.
After the shot was fired, officers attempted life-saving measures; however, the 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
Due to the nature of the incident, ASIRT was contacted and has begun an investigation.
