Lyrics of a new song lampoon Surrey’s current policing mess.
So far, nobody has publicly claimed songwriting credit for “The Surrey Shuffle,” which sounds AI-generated to us.
The catchy country song, posted on social media channels, riffs on Surrey’s transition from the RCMP to Surrey Police, the recent dismissal of chief Norm Lipinski, resignations of two directors and resulting police board chaos at a June 17 meeting.
“Do the Surrey Shuffle, two steps left, three steps right, and there goes your chief,” a male voice sings in the chorus of the song, which mentions Doug McCallum, Brenda Locke, Harley Chappell and Lipinski.
“Board walks out, the crowd yells shame, nobody’s answering. It’s always someone else’s game. Do the Surrey Shuffle, it ain’t pretty to see. The most expensive square dance in B.C.”

On June 23 the song was posted on X by Lynda Steele, who says it aired on CKNW’s Jas Johal show the previous day. Steele, a local broadcaster, happens to be the wife of ex-chief Lipinski.
The song, a little over three minutes long, was also posted June 23 on Surrey First election team’s Facebook page with encouraging words to “turn up the sound and feel free to share.”
Posted below are lyrics to “The Surrey Shuffle”:
Red Serge blues…
Doug McCallum had a dream one night, I’m going to trade the mountains for a brand new fight. We want local control, he said with a grin, didn’t mention the bill, well, where do we begin.
$235 million deep, Surrey taxpayers crying themselves to sleep, six long years of chaos, drama and shame, and nobody’s quite sure who’s taking the blame.
Do the Surrey Shuffle, two steps left, three steps right, and there goes your chief. Board walks out, the crowd yells shame, nobody’s answering, it’s always someone else’s game. Do the Surrey Shuffle it ain’t pretty to see, the most expensive square dance in B.C.
Then Brenda Locke rode in on her high horse. ‘Bring back the Mounties.’ Well, no, not of course. The province said no, the court said no, too. So, she smiled for the cameras and said, “What can you do?”
Norm Lipinski showed up, did the job right, five and a half years kept Surrey in sight. Signed a new contract, barely dried the ink, then the board pulled the plug, didn’t even blink.
Do the Surrey Shuffle, two steps left, three steps right, and there goes your chief. Board walks out, the crowd yells shame, nobody’s answering. It’s always someone else’s game.
Do the Surrey Shuffle, it ain’t pretty to see. The most expensive square dance in B.C.
Harley Chappell said, “I wasn’t even there.” Packed up his gavel and walked out of that chair.
The new chair steps up with a straight face and says, “We just want different leadership going into the next phase.
Son, that ain’t an answer. That’s a rehearsed dodge. While extortion victims sat in the pews of that lodge. Asked about gang crimes, the safety of their streets. You’re off the agenda. Well, ain’t that neat.
Do the Surrey Shuffle, gag the chief’s voice, make sure he can’t criticize the political noise. Board walks out, crowd goes wild, Two-fifties a million gone, And honey, that ain’t mild.
Do the Surrey Shuffle, right before election day. Surrey taxpayers, well, you’re gonna pay.
