A 46-year-old man has been arrested by Peel police over a week after a search began for him following the death of a senior couple at a Mississauga home last week.
Jordan Sangwin was arrested by Toronto police around 5 p.m. Saturday after a tip came in from a member of the public, said Peel police Const. Laurie McCann at a news conference Sunday.
He was found in the area of Mimico Creek Park in a makeshift shelter, she said.
Sangwin was handed over to Peel police, who have now charged him with two counts of first degree murder, said McCann.
Police have been searching for Jordan Sangwin for over a week after his parents, a couple in their early 70s, were found with life-threatening injuries at a Mississauga home on June 18.
The couple died in hospital from their injuries, which police said was not caused by a firearm.
Peel police Insp. Mike Mavity thanked members of the community in Toronto and Peel, who submitted tips and allowed police into their homes to review footage.
“You’ll often hear us say that our community is our greatest asset,” he said, adding police received 25 tips on possible sightings of Sangwin over the past 10 days.
Mavity said police would continue to support the family, friends and community members impacted by the couple’s deaths.
“We’re truly sorry for your loss and we’re here to support you through the next process,” he said.
