The new service is to also create stronger connections between neighbourhoods and employment areas
The City of Surrey has issued a request for bids for the construction of a series of bus stops that are to be part of the new 68 Avenue Crosstown service.
Seventeen new stops are to be part of the east-west service to serve the growing area of South Newton between Scottsdale and the Newton Exchange.
TransLink announced the new service last year and recently wrapped up public consultation.
The request for bids includes 17 bus stops starting with one eastbound on 68th Avenue at Scott Road and winding their way to one northbound on 148th Street at 70th Avenue.
The service is to start in 2027 but will begin as peak-only.
More bus shelters coming for the city
Meanwhile, Surrey council recently received an update report on the city’s bus shelter expansion program, which commenced in July 2025 and was completed in April 2026.
It involved a total of 60 new bus shelters over a couple of phases, and at no installation costs for the city.
The installation for Phase 1 focused on high-ridership locations where daily boardings averaged 95 passengers or more and where the boulevard could readily accommodate shelters with minimal site preparation and concrete work, the report explains.
Most of the shelters are in North Surrey, with routes on 128th Street in Newton and 108th Avenue in City Centre. That phase was completed last December, and the total value invested by Pattison Outdoor Advertising was $979,916.
Phase 2 was geared to improve accessibility to transit and shelters on routes with moderate ridership, and was completed in April 2026. The total value using funding from the 2025 Community Works Fund Agreement amounted to $880,824.
Prior to the program, Surrey had 1,425 bus stops, of which 362 (25 per cent) had shelters.
Surrey staff are currently working with Pattison to identify and prioritize locations for additional shelter installations.
