Surrey council recently approved awarding a contract for engineering services for 140th Street Road Improvements from 72nd to 80B avenues.
The design work is to be completed this summer and construction of the project is anticipated to commence in fall of 2027, subject to council approval of a subsequent construction contract.
Staff anticipate that the project could be completed by the end of 2028.
It’s the latest phase of a multi-phased program to create a four-lane arterial widening of 140th Street between 72nd Avenue and 105th Boulevard, a key corridor connection between Newton and City Centre.
A Surrey report notes that the project also supports the King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, as it will provide for an alternative north-south corridor during construction of the BRT project.
Meanwhile, the city recently awarded a contract for road widening along King George Boulevard to support the future construction of the BRT.
The contract includes widening King George between 72nd and 76th avenues by adding a third southbound lane.
The road work is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
Surrey council also approved advancing the BRT project to full design.
The future line will run along a 19-km corridor with 12 stations from City Centre to Semiahmoo Town Centre.
