Stingers overcome seven-point deficit in target score, go on to 105-103 win in Canadian Elite Basketball League action
SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Mamba looked to have things in hand against the Edmonton Stingers in Canadian Elite Basketball League action on Sunday afternoon, but in the end just could close things out.
The Mamba led by six at target score and found themselves a single shot away from victory but would go on to drop a 105-103 decision to the Stingers in Edmonton.
Saskatoon falls to 6-7 with the loss and remain in third in the Western Conference, Edmonton improves to 5-7 and are in fourth place.
The Mamba led from start until the final moments in the contest, taking a 28-22 lead out of the first quarter, boosting their edge to 49-45 at half and taking a 12-point 78-66 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Edmonton slowly whittled away, though, and that included in target score, where Saskatoon led by as much as seven before the Stingers rallied to tie the game 101-101.
A pair of Jaylin Williams free throws got Saskatoon within two of the win, but Taye Donald would make two shots from the charity stripe to tie things up. Tavian Dunn-Martin had a chance to end things on the ensuing possession but couldn’t get his shot to fall, and Stanley Davis Jr. would end things on the Stingers’ next possession.
Tevian Jones led Saskatoon with 28 points and nine rebounds while Williams had 23 points and eight boards. Dunn-Martin scored 22, Devonte Bandoo added 13.
Nick Hornsby had the range for Edmonton, scoring 30 and hauling down 11 rebound to go along with five assists. Taye Donald had 15 points and seven assists, Emmanuel Bandoumel scored 12 and Tre King picked up 10 points and seven rebounds.
Saskatoon is back in action on Tuesday, June 30 when they travel to Winnipeg to face the Sea Bears.
