For Montrealers, Canada Day is the second holiday in two weeks, but the list of what’s open and closed is a little different than the week before.
Whether you’re schlepping your furniture from one apartment to another on Moving Day or celebrating Confederation, here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Montreal on Canada Day.
City services
Garbage, recycling, compost and other waste collection will take place according to regular schedules, the city says, and Ecocentres will be open regular hours.
Consignaction recycling centres, which were closed for the Fête nationale last week, will be open on Canada Day.
City permit counters and Accès Montréal offices, however, will be closed.
Montreal’s municipal court and its service counters will be closed, except for arraignments of people who are detained.
Leisure and culture
City pools and libraries have their own hours, which can vary from borough to borough, so the city suggests checking with individual facilities.
In general, libraries are closed on Wednesday, while pools are open — though they may be operating on holiday schedules.
The Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec’s Grande Bibliothèque is also closed.
The Biodôme, Biosphère, Montreal Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Planetarium will all be open.
Amusement park La Ronde will be open.
Shopping
Most grocery stores, including PA, Metro, IGA and Maxi stores, will be open on Canada Day, but Costco and Walmart stores will be closed.
Montreal’s public markets — including Atwater Market, Jean-Talon Market and Maisonneuve Market, as well as neighbourhood markets — will be open.
Pharmacies will also mostly be open, as will most dépanneurs.
Most retail stores, however, will be closed. Large malls are also closed, though some restaurants attached to malls may remain open.
SAQ stores will mostly be closed, though the liquor retailer’s Express-branded stores and some other locations will be open.
SQDC stores will be closed.
Transportation
STM buses and the métro will operate on a holiday schedule.
The REM will operate on a Sunday schedule, with service beginning only at noon because of planned work.
The STL in Laval and RTL in Longueuil will operate on Saturday schedules.
Exo commuter trains will operate on Sunday schedules, meaning no service on the Mont-St-Hilaire, Candiac and Mascouche lines. Exo buses, including Deux-Montagnes REM shuttles, will operate on Saturday schedules.
Note that transit fare prices go up on Wednesday.
Parking restrictions remain in effect despite the holiday, and parking meters remain in service.
