Conditions involve not coaching or being in any position of trust over anyone under 18
The head coach of a private volleyball club in North Vancouver who was once a star volleyball player in international competitions has been charged with 10 sexual offences, most of those involving teenaged girls.
On Thursday, North Vancouver RCMP announced charges had been laid against Iraj Mozaffari, 57, of North Vancouver.
Mozaffari is head coach and founder of the Toop o Toor Volleyball Club in North Vancouver, which he started after immigrating to Canada from Iran.
Mozaffari has been charged with three counts of sexual interference of a person under 16, two counts of touching a young person for a sexual purpose, and five counts of sexual assault.
The incidents are alleged to have happened between January 2016 and December 2024 in North Vancouver.
Four of the victims were girls under 18 at the time of the alleged offences, said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP. One of the victims was an adult.
Police announced in April 2025 that they had launched an investigation after receiving multiple reports in December 2024 that teenagers had been sexually assaulted by a volleyball coach while participating in a local volleyball club.
At that time, police also urged anyone with information to come forward.
On Thursday, Sahak praised the victims for being willing to speak to police.
“Without their courage, we would not be in the position we are in today.”
He added anyone who is a victim of sexual offences or experiencing trauma related to past incidents can call the RCMP’s victim services unit at 604-969-7540.
According to a story in the North Shore News in 2024, Mozaffari started playing volleyball around the age of 15, captained Iran’s national youth team for two years and the Iran B national team for another two years. When he joined the national team, he was the captain for more than four years.
After ending his professional career as a player, he was selected as the coach of Iran’s national team before immigrating to Canada.
Mozaffari has not yet entered a plea to the charges and none of the charges have been proven in court.
Following an appearance in North Vancouver provincial court Thursday, July 2, Mozaffari was released on conditions including surrendering any travel documents, not to teach, coach or mentor volleyball or any other sports, not to continue with either volunteer or paid positions that put him in a position of trust over anyone under the age of 18, and not to go to any public park, swimming pool or recreation area where anyone under age of 16 is likely to be present.
Mozaffari is due back in court July 15.
