‘The successful rescue of this cub highlights the importance of … working together to protect both wildlife and public safety,’ say police
LAC SEUL FIRST NATION – A young black bear cub is back in business after getting a plastic jug stuck on its head.
Officers with Lac Seul Police Service received a report from a member of the public who had observed the obviously distressed bear.
Police responded and found the bear near the Whitefish Bay dump. The bear cub was safely captured and taken back to the detachment, where officers carefully removed the jug without injury to the frightened animal.
At that point police contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources to determine the next course of action.
The cub was then taken back to the area where it was found and released in hopes of it reuniting with its mother.
“The successful rescue of this cub highlights the importance of community members reporting concerns and working together to protect both wildlife and public safety,” reads a Facebook post issued by the police service.
Police added the incident serves as a reminder to properly dispose of garbage and recyclable containers.
