The Ocean Lake Wind Project in Guysborough County has received its environmental assessment approval as of July 2, with construction set to begin in 2029.
This is the largest wind energy project the province has approved to date. The project will see through the construction of 158 turbines at Ocean Lake and it will take about five years.
Once it is up and running, the turbines will generate around 1,264 megawatts of clean electricity — enough to power around 400,000 homes.
It will also reduce Nova Scotia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions so much so that it is comparable to taking 420,000 gas-powered cars off the road, or in technical terms, will save 1.94 million tonnes of emissions.
This project is expected to create between 400 and 500 construction jobs, with another 40 to 50 people hired for operations. It will likely generate about $11 million in annual tax revenue for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.
The project must comply with 61 terms and conditions designed to protect the environment and human health. The project developers are EverWind NS Holdings Ltd. and Membertou Development Corp.
