Surrey soccer fans rally despite Canada’s exit from World Cup

Canada has been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after falling to Morocco 3-0 on Saturday (July 4) in Houston, Texas.

It was not the result many in Canada hoped for, but the Surrey Soccer Fan Zone filled up quickly in the hours leading up to the 10 a.m. PT kickoff as fans prepared to cheer on their chosen team.

The dozen or so Moroccan fans celebrated the win, although Canada fought hard and kept Morocco on its toes, especially in the first half.

Even though Canada is out of the World Cup, there is still plenty of opportunity to watch one of the matches on a big screen at the Surrey soccer fan zones.

By the end of Saturday (July 4), over 100,000 people will have visited Surrey’s fan zone at Civic Plaza and the agriplex in Cloverdale, said Ryan Gallagher, City of Surrey Manager of Culture.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said, “It’s been absolutely incredible to see our community come together, come together like never before to celebrate the World Cup right here at our fan zones.”

Admission is free at Surrey’s official “watch party” sites, which has soccer-related activities, food and bar service, live music on select days and other attractions.

The Civic Plaza fan zone will be open until July 15th, then it will move to Holland Park during Surrey Fusions Fest on July 18-19 to show the Bronze and final matches. The Cloverdale Agriplex fan zone is open July 1-19, and the one at South Surrey Athletic Park will open July 14-19.
