According to the 2021 Census, the population of Newton was 159,390 or 28 per cent of Surrey’s total population
Surrey council has approved awarding a contract for a consultant for engineering services for the Newton Sanitary Trunk Upgrades project.
The contract includes the detailed design of approximately 2.5 km of sanitary trunk sewer infrastructure and flow diversion work along 138th Street, 68th Avenue and Hyland Road to support growth in the Newton Town Centre and the Newton-King George Boulevard development areas.
The total capital value of the major sewer line project is estimated to be $14 million, a report notes.
The design work is to be completed by December 2026.
Construction for the project is anticipated to be tendered over multiple phases between 2027 to 2030, subject to council approval of subsequent construction contracts.
Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver recently provided an update on the Newton Pump Station replacement.
Located between 63rd and 62nd avenues and 126th and 128th street, the new Newton Pump Station is to replace the existing pump station that is reaching the end of its service life.
The new facility will increase the delivery of drinking water to Surrey’s growing population and meet current seismic requirements, according to Metro.
Crews have completed several major concrete pours, and the foundation and underground components are nearing completion, Metro notes, adding that activities will soon progress above ground, with crews installing large structural beams while continuing work underground.
During the upcoming work, nearby residents may experience some disruption, including increased truck traffic and periods of increased noise and dust, Metro states. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Among the other changes coming for the growing community will be the new $310.6 million Newton Community Centre, a 175,000-square-foot facility which is to be completed by 2030.
