Aging in place doesn’t have to look clinical
As an interior designer, Joan Walker understands the comfort older adults find in their own homes. It’s where they’ve raised families, welcomed friends and forged connections. The key is finding ways to age in place safely, and that’s where thoughtful design can help.
“As we get older, our needs change, yet many older adults want to remain in the home and neighbourhood they love,” explains Walker, owner and founder of The Curtain Call Custom Interiors, here in White Rock and South Surrey.
“This is their world. They’ve raised their families there. They have their routines there, and they love where they live.”
Calling on her years of interior design experience, Walker helps seniors adapt their homes to allow independence and confidence while also ensuring safety.
Even something as simple as changing a doorknob to a lever can make a meaningful difference to someone with arthritis in their hands. Adjusting wall colours, lighting or modifying the layout can help seniors see better and prevent falls.

None of it, Walker notes, has to look clinical. Thoughtful design can make a home safer and easier to move through while keeping the style a homeowner has always loved.
“They want to feel good about themselves, they want to feel strong, and they want to be independent, so we can help identify what their goals are, and how their space can support them,” Walker says.
