Chase Briscoe had more than Fourth of July to celebrate this weekend as he captured his first NASCAR Cup Series win of the season. He won the eero 400 on Sunday, July 5 in NASCAR’s first time at Chicagoland Speedway in six years.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver started the day in seventh position and took the lead in the third and final stage of the race. Briscoe outlasted Christopher Bell, who was surging late, but was slowed when he got caught in dirty air on the final lap. Denny Hamlin, who had pole position for the competition, finished third. Per NASCAR, this gave Joe Gibbs Racing their eighth 1-2-3 finish in team history.

It was a Toyota-tastic day as seven cars from the Japanese maker finished in the Top 10 of the race, which is a record for a Cup Series competition.

Briscoe was racing in a patriotic livery honoring the 250th birthday of the United States and he seemed exhilarated at the nature of the racing.

“I thought that was about as good a race as you could get. The cat-and-mouse game, and we were slipping and sliding around,” he said, according to NASCAR. “Hopefully, you could see it on TV. So excited to be back in Chicagoland. Hopefully we can be back.”

William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports was the leader after each of the first two stages and was at the front of the pack for 94 laps. He finished fourth.

The Cup Series competed at Chicagoland every year from 2001-2019, but many of the series’ younger drivers had never raced on the worn-out intermediate oval that has not been repaved since the facility opened. And NASCAR’s current Next Gen car has never been used there either, which added to the mystique for both drivers and fans on race day.

Prior to Sunday’s outing, only three active drivers had even won a race at Chicagoland – Hamlin, Alex Bowman and Brad Keselowski – and Keselowski is the only one to have triumphed more than once (Kyle Busch, who died May 21, also had two victories at the track). Though both of Keselowski’s victories came earlier in his career (2012 and 2014), he has only finished outside the top 10 twice in 11 races at the track (2009, 2010).

Bowman was the most recent winner, dominating the second half of the 2019 race before edging Kyle Larson by 0.546 seconds. The victory was the first of the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s Cup Series career.

The next NASCAR Cup Series race is the Quaker State 400 on Sunday, July 12 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
