Peel Regional Police are asking for the public’s help to identify two suspects after an elderly woman was targeted in a distraction theft in Mississauga.
Police say the incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on June 26 near Garnetwood Chase and Rathburn Road East. The victim was approached by a woman who got out of the front passenger seat of a newer blue Kia Sportage without licence plates.
Investigators allege the female suspect repeatedly asked if the woman was okay before placing a fake gold chain around her neck. When the victim resisted and tried to call for help, a struggle followed. A male suspect, believed to be the driver, briefly covered the victim’s mouth while the pair stole her 18-karat gold necklace and pendant, valued at about $3,500.
The suspects fled westbound on Rathburn Road East in the blue Kia. The female suspect is described as being between 40 and 50 years old, with a medium build, black hair, a colourful headscarf and a long black skirt. The victim told police the suspect spoke a mix of Croatian and English. No description of the male suspect has been released.
Police are reminding residents to be cautious of strangers offering assistance, gifts or jewellery, as distraction thefts are often used to steal valuables.
Investigators are seeking witnesses and anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage recorded in the area between 3:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on June 26.
