Punjabi music is currently making big waves on the global music scene, and Canada plays an integral role.
Some of the biggest Punjabi acts in the world right now such as AP Dhillon, Karan Aujla and Shubh, have roots in cities like Brampton, Ont., Surrey, B.C. and Victoria. And while these stars have emerged in recent years, there’s a long history of musicians who laid the foundation for their success.
The Punjabi Wave is a new series by CBC Music, in partnership with the CBC Creator Network, that explores the rise of Punjabi music in Canada, looking at how it grew from wedding halls to sold-out arenas, and the artists and producers who used music to bridge sounds, identities and generations.
In the first episode, we look at the first Punjabi Canadian superstar, Jazzy B. Cited by many of today’s acts as an influential figure and inspiration, this Surrey artist made genre-defining music that changed the direction of the Punjabi music industry.
